1936-S Texas Silver Commemorative Half Dollar – NGC MS65 – Light Toning – Gen 3 Holder
This 1936-S Texas Silver Commemorative Half Dollar is graded MS65 by NGC and housed in a Generation 3 “fatty” holder, known for its early-era NGC certification style. The coin displays light, original toning over lustrous, well-preserved surfaces — a classic example of natural aging from decades of proper storage.
Part of the multi-year Texas Centennial commemorative series, the 1936-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint. Designed by Pompeo Coppini, it features a dynamic obverse with an eagle set before the Lone Star of Texas, and a reverse showing portraits of Texas founders Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin.
Coins with subtle toning and early-generation holders are increasingly desirable among collectors for their originality and added pedigree. This example checks all the right boxes for both eye appeal and long-term value.
One can expect collector interest in Texas commemoratives to steadily increase as we approach the Texas Bicentennial in 2036.
The 1936-S Texas is very similar to the other 1935 and 1936 issues, i.e. it is relatively common in grades MS64 to MS67. The 1936-S is slightly tougher to find in MS67 than the other five 1935-1936 issues. All six issues have a similar mintage, ranging from 8911 to 10,007. The typical 1936-S has frosty original luster and excellent eye appeal.
