1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar – NGC MS64
This 1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar is graded MS64 by NGC and stands as a brilliant example of one of the most iconic U.S. commemorative gold issues. Struck at the San Francisco Mint for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, this small-format coin honors the opening of the Panama Canal and celebrates American innovation and expansion.
Designed by Charles Keck, the obverse features the head of a typical laborer from the Panama Canal construction. The reverse shows 2 dolphins representing the linking of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This MS64 example is well-struck with minimal marks and full luster, offering excellent collector value just below gem level.
With limited original mintage and strong historic significance, Panama-Pacific gold dollars are a cornerstone of classic commemorative gold series.
Q. David Bowers (derived from the PCGS Coin Guide): Another commemorative category is that of early 20th century gold coins, consisting of 11 different varieties of commemorative gold dollars minted from 1903 through 1922, the 1915-S Panama-Pacific quarter eagle and the 1926 Sesquicentennial quarter eagle, and, not often collected due to the rarity, the immense $50 round and octagonal pieces minted in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. All of these early gold coins are scarce, and some of them, particularly, the 1904 and 1905 Lewis and Clark gold dollars and the 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 pieces, are rare.
